Stories of Resilience

Waubgeshig Rice and Kai Thomas, joined by their friend Adrian Harewood, engaged in a powerful conversation exploring themes of identity, resilience, hope, and renewal through their novels Moon of the Turning Leaves and In the Upper Country. Their vivid storytelling illuminated the beauty of often-overlooked cultures while delivering universal messages of courage, rootedness, and the importance of community and connection to the land. Together, they delved into the historical ties between Indigenous and Black enslaved peoples, uncovering a little-known chapter of Canadian history and challenging perspectives. Their mentorship of youth from the Assembly of Seven Generations further highlighted their commitment to uplifting others, earning them a well-deserved standing ovation.
